General Description

The MAG 8 Card access controllers are our next Generation of access controllers. It is built with the latest of technology from Motorola, the HC12 micro-controller. It is built to meet the ever increasing demand for reliability and power. Microprocessor based applications, in almost every field, has become packed with user-friendly features. Security is of no exception. This puts greater demand on the speed and reliability of communications and on larger and faster memories.

The HC12 processor was chosen with these in our minds. The features of the processor permits us to reduce component count by two thirds from the MAG 5, which is HC11 based. Memory has been increased from a 64Kbyte addressable space to 5Mbyte space. SMT (Surface Mount Technology) is used for circuit board layout to reduce RF emission. Processor speed has been doubled to 8 MHz.

Furthermore, the MAG 8 supports communications speeds up to 56K baud that is a far cry from the 4.8K maximum of the pervious versions. Expansion slots are now available for Local Area Network options and well as for other peripherals being developed for enhanced security. To top it all, the MAG 8 has 2 communications ports (as an option) and can operate in two different technologies if desired. For example, one could be IEC 422 standard and the other Fiber Optics. This is the infrastructure used to build no down systems.

Reader Attachments

The MAG8 will use any readers with a Wiegand interface of 16 to 42 bits. It will also accept devices with RS232/RS422 interfaces. However, because of the varied number of protocols that can exist on those readers, please submit your enquires via your dealers to us to confirm if the devices with these attachments can be used.

Some standard devices that can be used with the MAG8 are, Barcode readers, Magnetic card Readers, Proximity Read or Read/Write systems (e.g EM-Marin, Mifare, Tag-it  etc.), biometric systems (e.g thumb print, palm geometry, retina scan .. etc),  and smartcards (single or combo).

Integration and System

The Mag 8 can be integrated together to form a system that extends to cover the entire installation. The software package that does this is the IES MicroPlus software. At the entry level, Microplus allows for either a 16 controller system or a 64 controller system depending on the type of communications hardware that is used.

This means that expansion from 16 to 64 does not require any messy software upgrade or change. At the mid-end, 512 Mag 8 controllers can be networked together. At the very maximum, 64000 Mag 8 controllers can be networked together.

The network utilizes industry standards like RS422 and LAN (802.3), TCP/IP communications protocol. By using the LAN/WAN technology, geographical barriers does exist. Access controllers can be located half-way round the world and yet be online without problems.

Extended Systems

In the extended systems configuration, the MAG 8 can work together with other families of equipment. For example, the Digital Field Panels from IES are alarm monitoring devices and can be networked together with the MAG8, on the same bus if necessary. Together with the powerful MicroPlus software, a sophisticated system which serves the full security solution of most installations, can be constructed. This includes a seamlessly integrated system to print and produce badges with the MicroPlus Badgemaker Software.
